For my second embroidery project I did ....another monogram (surprise, surprise)! I was on a real kick this year for handmade Christmas gifts. I wasn't planning on going with a handmade theme, I just kept seeing things on Pinterest that I knew people would love.
My sister-in-law loves cooking/baking. So, when I saw I this double potholder on Pinterest, I knew it was the gift for her. I thought the double pockets were too cute, and something I hadn't seen a lot. I went to Joannes and got some utility wool, cotton batting, and this great black & white retro print. I had already made the base of the potholder when I thought, "This would look really great with a monogram." So I put my machine sewing on hold, and snapped one of the pockets into an embroidery hoop.
I knew I wanted to keep the design simple, because the print was a little busy already. Reflecting the circle motif of the print, I designed this traditional style monogram. To draw the perfect circle border, I traced around the rim of a glass. I used a chain stitch to made the circular boarder. This is by far my favorite stitch. It makes creating thick borders really easy, and looks complex.
I typed the letters up on the computer first (of course), so I would have something to reference when drawing them it. This font was simple enough that I didn't feel the need to print it of and transfer it. I just eye-balled it. I sewed the letters in with a split stitch. I started with just one stitch thickness for a good base, and then widened the letters to three stitches thick. This makes it easier to keep your lines straight and can help avoid/fix mistakes. I could have gone over the letters with a silk stitch for a more traditional monogram look, but I thought the split stitch turned out too good to cover up.
Above is the final result of the potholder. Perfect give for the chef in your family. Make it in your kitchen colors and hang it over your oven handle for a decorative statement.
I hope you enjoyed this post. Stay tuned for my other embroidery projects (featured in the cover photo). Check out yesterday's post to see the Monogrammed Infinity Scarf.
