Embroidery Project #4: Embellished Brush/Crochet Roll

Welcome to my fourth and final (at least for now) embroidery post! This project was a Christmas gift for my mother. Within the past few years she has become an exceptional crocheter, which just happen to coinside with the birth of her first grandchild. Coincidence? I think not.  Now, with four grandchildren (3 in the past 6 months), she has been on a crocheting marathon making beautiful baby blankets and the cutest/teeniest hats.

Searching for beginner sewing projects on Pinterest, I came across a couple patterns for brush rolls or  crochet rolls. I knew it would be the perfect gift for my mom. The great thing about about handmade gifts is that it gives you the opportunity to customize it for that specific person. I wanted to include a couple personalized details to make this crochet roll special and unique.

I wanted to use a mixture of fabrics to give the design a quirky/eclectic look. I used some of the same fabric from the Monogrammed Pot Holder for the majority of the outside. I thought the black and white was a little too bold, so I flipped the fabric over and used the reverse side for a more muted print. I have a habit of doing this. I love the variety it introduces. It allows you to mix things up without being too all over the place. And doesn't the contrast between the background and trim look great? Yes, I think so too.

On the inside, I introduced this adorable cameo print. It has this perfect barbie meets vintage vibe, which I knew my mom would love (We have very similar taste). I actually found this print and the pink chevron in the remnants bin at Joannes. I think I paid $4 total, for the both of them. Jackpot, right? Since, I am mostly making small accessories, I shop from the remnants, a lot. You can buy high-quality fabric for a low price. And, you don't have to go through the process of picking out the perfect fabric (I can never decide what to choose!!).  Sometimes the perfect fabric chooses you.

Now for the embroidery details. This cameo fabric was way too cute to keep on the inside. I thought it would make the perfect embellishment to the outside of the roll. I used a stem stitch for the frame and the initial. When I first started embroidering, I hated the stem stitch. But, after making two Christmas Stockings (which is a whole other story), I have come to appreciate it. And note, that I didn't "design" the frame, I just "traced" over the fabric with the embroidery stitches. Embellishing a printed fabric, like this one, would be a great introduction project to embroidery.

The other customized detail I included to this crochet roll was a special pocket for her to keep her readers.  I cut the shape from the pink chevron fabric, and embroidered it onto the pocket using a back-stitch.

After I gave her this gift, I received the picture picture below. It made me happy to see that everything fit perfectly!
